A market town in Powys has been named the happiest place to live in Wales.

The announcement comes following research of residents across Britain during 2019 by property portal Rightmove.

The town even made it into the top five UK happiest places, charting at number five behind Hexham, Harrogate, Richmond upon Thames and Galashiels in Scotland.

The website’s ‘Happy at Home’ index asks residents to rate where they live based on 12 ‘happiness’ factors.

These factors include how friendly the neighbours are, how safe residents feel, culture and things to do and the level of community spirit.

The results of more than 22,000 respondents has created the rightmove list that sees Llandrindod Wells coming out on top in Wales.

Monmouth was the only other Welsh place named in rightmove’s top 10 happy at home results, coming in at number seven.

1. Llandrindod Wells
2. Monmouth
3. Swansea
4, Cardiff
5. Llandudno
6. Newport
7. Caerphilly
8. Bridgend
9. Wrexham

Llandrindod Wells is situated in the heart of the Powys countryside and, according to the website Visit Wales, has been a popular place to live for thousands of years, with evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlements in the area.

More recently, it has became a popular spa town with the Victorians keen to try the ‘healing qualities’ of the local spring water that was identified by the Romans.

The legacy of the influx of people during this ‘boom time’ is the town’s distinct and attractive architecture when ornate hotels, shops, homes and even garages were built with grand design at their core.

The central area at that time was the historic Rock Park and Spa near the town centre that remains a popular place to meet and relax with local residents and visitors.

Since Victorian times the town has grown popular as the central point of travelling through Wales and the result is a mix of property stock ranging from grand Victorian, to mid-century to new build homes within the area.

And if the rightmove results have inspired you to pack up and move to ‘happy town’ the good news is that compared to most towns in Wales, here a buyer gets far more property for their pound.

Here are some properties to suit a range of budgets currently on the market there…
