Rather than team up with allies to face up to China, Trump is willing to attack his natural supporters

In Britain, it was what Donald Trump had to say on the NHS that was the focus of attention. He wouldn’t touch it even if it was presented on a silver platter, he said, which may or may not have been scripted by No 10 but many people seem to have found his comments almost as offensive as the initial suggestion that he might want to buy it as part of US/UK trade negotiations.

For markets, on the other hand, it was what he had to say about the China trade talks that stirred the sinews, and not in a good way. That long-awaited China trade deal had been expected any day, but may now be delayed…
